Divisions of Play

Please read and understand Little League Baseball’s age determination policy in order to properly determine your player’s League Age.

Softball Divisions

78er Softball

78er softball is coach pitch softball for girls (often aged 7 or 8, hence the name).  It is intended to provide a fun way to learn the game, with adults handling the pitching. The 78er program bridges the gap between Tee Ball and kid-pitch softball, where kids continue to learn the fundamentals of the game and transition to hitting a pitched softball.  Coaches will provide feedback during the skills days sessions to help find the division your player is ready for.

Minors Fastpitch Softball

Minors softball is open to 9-10 year old girls. Minors is both instructional and competitive, with a greater emphasis on instruction. Players are invited to Skills Day to determine placement. Players learn the fundamentals of fastpitch softball. At the beginning of the season, there may be a modified coach pitch rule which is slowly phased out during the remainder of the year.

Minors practice two weeknights in March and April and play Saturday games in April, then switch to one weeknight practice, one weeknight game, and a Saturday game from May through mid-June. Depending on enrollment, games may be played throughout the District (south Seattle and south King County).

Majors Fastpitch Softball

Majors softball is for 10-12 year old girls. Majors is competitive, while still teaching the game. Players are required to attend Skills Day to determine placement and to balance team rosters. Majors practice two weeknights in March and April and play Saturday games in April, then switch to one weeknight practice, one weeknight game, and a Saturday game from May through mid-June.

Depending on enrollment, games may be played throughout the District (south Seattle and south King County).

Juniors Fastpitch Softball

Juniors softball is offered for 13 and 14 year old girls.  These teams play other teams in the King County area.  Juniors softball continues to be played on a 60' diamond, but with an increase in the pitching distance to 43', which are the same distances as are used in high school softball.

Games will be played throughout the District (south Seattle and south King County).

Baseball Divisions

Tee Ball

Tee Ball is for girls & boys ages 4-6. Players will learn the fundamentals of baseball, have fun, and experience the value of teamwork. Games are played on Saturdays at Garfield Playfield. Additionally, teams will have a one-hour practice one weekday evening each week during the season at a neighborhood park. Practices are typically at 5pm or 6pm, on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - depending on the coach's schedule. You can send a note to our Registrar ([email protected]) if you require a particular practice day.

Coach Pitch Baseball

Coach Pitch is for girls and boys ages 7-8, and 6 year olds who have played 1 year of Tee Ball and are ready for fielding batted balls. If you have any questions about whether your child is ready, please contact [email protected].

The coaches do the pitching to ensure that the games maintain a steady pace and are fun. Players will work on baseball skills such as defensive positions, throwing, fielding and hitting techniques, and base running.

Games are played on Saturdays at Bailey Gatzert Elementary. Additionally, teams will have a one-hour practice one weekday evening each week during the season, also at Gatzert.

Rookies Baseball

Rookies (1st year kid-pitch) is for 8-9 year old boys and girls. 8 year-olds must have completed 2 seasons of Coach Pitch. Players pitch at this level, but there is no stealing. The Rookies division is both instructional and competitive, with more emphasis on skills refinement during the season.

Rookies practice two weeknights March-April, and play Saturday games in April, then switch to one weeknight practice, one weeknight game, and a Saturday game from May through mid-June. Rookies play some interleague games against Rainier District Little League teams.

Minors Baseball

Minors is for 9-10 year old boys and girls who have completed their one season at Rookies. Players pitch at this level, and the complete game of Little League baseball is taught. The Minors division is both instructional and competitive, with a divisional playoff in the final two seeks of the season. Participation in Skills Day is required for players in this division, and Minors players are subject to the League Draft. Please register for your preferred Skills Day session during registration.

Majors Baseball

Intermediates Baseball

Intermediates, also known as "50/70", is for players 12-13 years old based on skills assessment. The division is intended as a bridge from Majors to Juniors and/or High School play. The 50/70 name comes from the diamond dimensions – 70′ basepaths and 50′ pitching distance; these dimensions are larger than the Little League diamond but smaller than the regulation field players will encounter in High School and beyond. The full game, including leadoffs and true steals, is taught.

Participation in Skills Day is required for players in this division, and players are subject to the League Draft. The Intermediates schedule is played throughout the District, and will involve interleague play against teams from other Leagues in south Seattle and south King County.

Juniors Baseball

Juniors baseball is offered for 13 and 14 year old boys.  These teams play other teams in the King County area.  Juniors baseball is played on a 90' (full size) baseball diamond, equivalent to what the players will experience in high school and beyond.
